5 things to prepare to make your family photoshoot special
Family sessions are a wonderful way to capture the love in your family, creating family heirloom, an invaluable gift to your children & yourself. If you're planning a family photoshoot in Bristol, or in England in general, it's essential to prepare adequately to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. In this blog post, we'll explore five crucial tips & tricks I have gathered 5 years into my photography business, after photographing hundreds of families, to help you prepare!
Selecting the Perfect Location in Bristol or beyond
When it comes to family photoshoots, location is key. Either in-home or outdoors we will find the perfect location for your tribe. Bristol offers a plethora of picturesque spots that can serve as the ideal backdrop for your family portraits. In my favorite locations there are beaches, forests, city landscapes. These are locations I have carefully scouted, ensured that there’s enough intimacy, an ideal light & sometimes facilities like toilets (that can be appreciated with kids). I’ve been so inspired since moving to the UK, by the lush greenery & nature sceneries. You may see this outdoor photoshoot like an adventure, a new place to discover with your children, exploring together, this will be a magical moment both in your memories & in images.
If you’d rather have the session take place in the comfort of your home let me reassure you there is no need to have a perfect space. I will find the pockets of lights & maybe move a few furnitures around. Prior your photoshoot we will exchange & I will advise you in the best possible way. Using your family home as the backdrop for your photographs will immortalise precious memories for your kids to remember their childhood home.
2. Coordinating Outfits for a Unified Look
A cohesive and coordinated look can significantly enhance the overall aesthetic of your family photos. My favorite color palette is in earthy colours - browns & greens - and choosing complementary colours for each member of your family. I design my client’s experience high-end & all-in-hand, upon your booking we will plan a call & I will send you a guide. I want you to be comfortable & choose adequate clothes if we’re adventuring, maybe warm clothes & waterproof shoes. It is my wish that you feel beautiful so I have gathered pieces for my Client’s wardrobe - see the items here - some I have had tailored or even made myself.
3. Essential items to bring
Pack water, snacks & anything you might need for your kids. Bring along props that hold sentimental value, such as a favorite blanket, heirloom accessories, or even your pet. These details add a personal touch to your photos and make them truly one-of-a-kind. Games / bubbles can give the session a new breath when the kids get bored or tired. This is your family photoshoot, make it unique, make it your own. I’m open to any suggestions & ideas to craft photographs you’ll cherish forever.
4. No expectation is the expectation
Have fun, swing your kids, play their favorite games, tickle them.
The true beauty of family photos lie in its authenticity, imperfections, and the unexpected moments that make each bond so special. My sessions are children-led, we do not pose, we do not force. We follow the kids in the adventures or stories they wish to bring us along to. We get sweaty, messy, dirty… In the future your kids will yearn for natural images of you with them, you as you are everyday, you as a parent.
Let go, be yourselves, and savor the unscripted moments that make your family truly extraordinary. After all, it's the genuine smiles, laughter, and the unexpected that transform a photoshoot into a cherished memory for years to come. So have fun & connect with your loved ones.
5. Choose the Right Photographer for your family
The photographer’s selection is crucial to get the photographs that reflect your family. I’m convinced there is a photographer for each family out there. Look for someone’s style you like & have a portfolio that aligns with your vision. Schedule a consultation to discuss your wishes, style preferences, and any specific requests you may have.
Conclusion:
With these five essential tips, you're well on your way to preparing for a memorable and special family photoshoot in Bristol or further in England. Remember to plan ahead, choose the location that fits your family, coordinate outfits, pack wisely, incorporate personal touches, and select carefully your photographer to capture those precious moments that will be cherished for years to come & ENJOY!
